Southend Vulcan announces open day – August 20

The brand new issue of FlyPast is out in UK shops today.

As part of our Cold War special, we paid a visit to the Vulcan Restoration Trust which looks after Avro Vulcan B.2 XL426 at Southend. As some of you will already know, the VRT recently had some great news – they’ve been able to move XL426 into its own hangar.

Not only that, but you can go and see the Vulcan for yourself later this month, and at a small extra cost, visit the cockpit. VRT’s next Visit The Vulcan Day takes place on Sunday August 20. As well as XL426, displays will include Buccaneer, Jaguar and Hunter aircraft cockpit nose sections, a Green Goddess fire engine, Essex Fire Fighting Museum fire engine, London Southend Airport fire engine, ‘Cold War’ military vehicles displays, classic 1960s and ‘70s cars, children’s face painter stall, ice cream and doughnut kiosk, burger and hot dog stand and a micro brewery stall.

Plus, the Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane of the Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will fly past at approximately 4:10pm.

General admission is £4.00 for adults with accompanied under-16s admitted FREE. Admission allows visitors entry to the hangar to walk around the Vulcan, take a guided tour if they wish and take photographs. For an additional £3.50 per person applicable to both adults and under-16s, visitors can climb inside the Vulcan’s cockpit. The Vulcan Restoration Trust’s stand will also be open with a wide selection of Vulcan souvenirs on sale. See:
