Hometown honour for World War One hero

A life size statue of Great War VC recipient Sgt Thomas Mottershead was unveiled on April 1 in his hometown of Widnes, Cheshire, by his grandson Colin and AM Sir Roger Austin. The statue’s design was inspired by an image of Tom posing in his new uniform for his wife, Lilian. A blue plaque has also been installed at Tom’s birthplace, 6 Vine Street.
